In this episode Garth interviewed Valerie Jones Taylor from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. Valerie’s research about stereotyping and prejudice — specifically about interracial interactions and stereotyping — is particularly relevant for today’s classrooms and culture. She studies ‘meta-stereotypes,’ or the stereotypes a person believes someone will have about them — and then due to anxiety, I may be motivated to disprove the stereotype. Her research and teaching intersect as she utilizes effective methods of fictional (comic strip) and virtual (VR) worlds in the laboratory and in her classes to test theories from social psychology intended to be interventions to reduce racism. By using VR technology, Valerie’s students can have brief experiences with the homeless, refugees, and more.
